Rising moon

Trying to compose an image with a rangefinder camera as in Leica M9 is really difficult, especially with a wide angle lens. I had to paint the moon back in from a just prior frame, and it’s still not what I wanted, and I’m missing a group of lights. It’s terribly hard to figure out what will fall where using a separate optical system (what you see is very roughly what you’ll get). A big mental game where time and effort are required to master approximate composition.

When Leica releases an M10 or whatever with Live View (CMOS sensor will likely be needed), it will suddenly become a lot more useful for all sorts of things. It sure is nice to stuff 3 or 4 lenses into a small hip pouch along with the camera, and still weigh less than a big DSLR with one small lens, something I go into detail on in my Leica M9 review.

I’m really liking the Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH, on loan from B&H Photo. It’s the widest lens you can shoot on the M9 and not have to use a hot shot mounted viewfinder. And I’m able to focus it accurately almost all the time. Definitely recommended. Image quality is excellent. I’ll be adding to my Leica M9 review the 28/2 ASPH and other lenses over the next month or so.
