Olympus M. Zuiko 60mm f/2.8 ED Macro (Micro Four Thirds)
Olympus is releasing a new 60mm macro lens for Micro Four Thirds. I will be covering the new 60/2.8 macro in my Guide to Mirrorless sometime in November.
The new 60mm is a Micro Four Thirds lens (compared to Full Four Thirds for the existing Olympus 50mm f/2).
A 60mm lens on Micro Four Thirds is about the same as a 120mm macro lens on a full-frame DSLR— a good thing, since it offers more working distance.
While excellent at close range, I have not been impressed at medium and far distance with the Panasonic MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm f/2.8, so I am hoping that this Olympus 60/2.8 macro turns out to be a good performer at all distances.
Olympus description
It is interesting that Olympus mentions both landscape photography and portrait shooting, suggesting that the lens is corrected not just for close range, but also for distance. This would be a major plus for all around use. Given its new design and the apparently high grade construction, this lens hold promise.
This high quality macro lens is ideal for shooting under a wide range of conditions, including other applications such as landscape and portrait shooting.
Featuring a closest focusing distance of 7.4 inches, excellent close-up capability with 1X* magnification, and dust-/splash-proof construction. This lens incorporates 13 lens elements in 10 groups with extensive use of special glass materials such as ED (Extra-low Dispersion), HR (High Refractive index) and E-HR (Extra-High Refractive index) elements to completely eliminate the chromatic aberrations that can be noticeable with telephoto macro lenses.
The new FR-2 Adapter Ring provides easy attachment of Olympus’s RF-11 ring flash or STF-22 twin flash allowing for professional and easy TTL Macro Flash Illumination at Macro working distances.
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro incorporates Olympus's exclusive MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism, which is based on a floating-type inner focusing system with three drive systems resulting in no change in the overall lens length during autofocusing. Other features such as focus limit switching and a shooting distance/magnification indicator window enhance macro shooting control and precision.
