Stitching with the Sigma DP2 Merrill

The true-color Foveon sensor in the Sigma DP Merrill cameras offers tremendous per-pixel sharpness as compared to conventional Bayer matrix sensor found in virtually all other cameras. And the lenses of the DP Merrill cameras are excellent also.

So I wondered: can one simply shoot 3-frames for a stitched result that approaches Nikon D800E resolution territory?

The answer is yes. The 27.7-megapixel image below was shot handheld, but the Auto Align Layers and Auto Blend Layers functionality in Photoshop CS6 made short work of it.

With three frames, one achieves a ~5:4 aspect ratio akin to traditional 4 X 5 film— quite a nice proportion. With four frames the 3:2 aspect ratio can be achieved (~30% overlap is generally advised for stitching).

Taking more care with a tripod and appropriate gear can reduce the rotational issues (especially at close range) to a minimum; even so this closer range image worked well and I made no such effort.

I suppose one could take it as a challenge to shoot a stitched image of a horse, but I did not attempt that.
