The Color Gamut of Fruit
Everyone talks about noise and sharpening, but one hardly reads any talk of color gamut, or even any attempt to evaluate noise by gamut, which is a procedural error.
To DAP, I’ve added a new example of how critical color gamut especially for red and orange tones.
This example follows the previous Why a Wide Gamut Color Space Matters and Wide Gamut Colorspace Reduces Noise, Avoids Posterization pages.
These discussions apply to any modern camera, all of which now have extended gamuts far exceeding the capabilities of the sRGB or AdobeRGB color spaces. Modern printers have “vivid magenta” inks and other colors now capable of printing colors that AdobeRGB cannot represent. This trend will advance further.
The crop below greatly exceeds the gamut of the AdobeRGB color space (reds get flattened to a dull orange-red!). Accordingly, it is shown in the ProPhotoRGB color space. Use a colorspace aware web browser and a calibrated wide-gamut display to enjoy the sheer beauty of the colors. iPhone and iPad will destroy this image.
