Nikon 58mm f/1.4G tested against Nikon 58mm f/1.2 NOCT-Nikkor
Added to DAP is an in-depth analysis of the optical performance of the Nikon AF-S 58mm f/1.4G vs the legendary 58mm f/1.2 NOCT-Nikkor. From wide open through f/16.
When the lens arrived it was mid-day and so I shot a close-range scene under lighting I could control, looking for clues as to how the two lenses performed (sharpness, bokeh, focus shift, vignetting, etc).
As sometimes happens by a combination of good luck and experienced choices of mundane but useful objects, this particular scene proved immensively instructive, and I consider it essential reading for anyone contemplating either lens.
Also included are a discussion of the MTF chart, a general page on Nikon normal lenses and an introductory overview. HD and Ultra-HD images are included, along with large crops.
Review of the Nikon AF-S 58mm f/1.4G
As an adjunct, I also address the question of whether f/1.2 can deliver more brightness to a digital sensor than f/1.4.
Ad-hoc examples with the Nikon AF-S 58/1.4G coming soon.
