Nikon Z7: High-Grade EVF

As with everything else, I have to see it to confirm, but this might be the EVF I’ve been waiting for for years now*. With high-grade optics and a ~3.7 megadot OLED display and 0.8X magnification (really good), it sounds like a joy to look through.

Viewfinder visibility is crucial for photographers. In developing a mirrorless camera system, Nikon didn’t just aim for impressive specifications. The Z 7’s electronic viewfinder boasts an organic EL panel, approx. 100% frame coverage and approx. 0.8× magnification*, with an approx. 37.0° diagonal viewing angle. But it also draws on Nikon’s superior optical and image-processing technology to ensure a clear and comfortable view with reduced aberration and minimum eyestrain, even during extended shoots. Furthermore, fluorine coat is applied to the eyepiece protection window, reducing flare while repelling dirt.

* Meaning in a camera that I find desirable, e.g., all 24 megapixel cameras are unacceptable. There are other cameras with similar high-res EVFs out there: Leica SL, Sony A7R III, Sony A9. The quality of the view is a 3-way combination of resolution, optics, and refresh rate. Only until there is a chance to look through viewfinder can it be known which is most pleasant to use. Plus some cameras like the Leica SL have inexplicably non-functional EVFs with polarized sunglasses (complete blackout), making it an unusable bright snow or similar—literally painful. The Nikon Z7 and Sony A7R III work without issues with sunglasses.
