Reader Comment: Sony A1 Eye AF “Sharp Eyelashes”
Regarding Sony Eye AF (and other brands).

Just as you had pointed out, they get the lashes in focus, and the iris is “soft”, to be kind about it.
When I saw that, I immediately thought about that comment of yours.
DIGLLOYD: I want sharp-iris Eye AF when I shoot portraits, and I cannot see any photographer looking to do first class work wanting anything less.
So this is disappointing (see below)—the iris is out of focus and the lens is stopped way down to f/5.6. Sharp leading finger, sharp eyelashes and eyebrows, but an OOF iris.
At f/1.4 or f/2 or f/2.8, you’ll be SOL at this distance.
On the bright side, it saves me the work of having to show the issue. Sony has done my work for me by advertising with their own images that Eye AF fails to focus on eyes! I probably will give it a whirl anyway, but it’s terribly disappointing.
How Sony managed to ensure no fine detail in their samples I don’t know—looks like in-camera JPEG badly done. Or maybe just overly compressed for web—dunno. But it looks like aggressive badly-done Unsharp Mask work.

Tigger says Eye AF has nothing do with rodents, so who cares?! No problem with Eye AF here.
