Fujifilm GFX100S: Sold It for Now, Might Reacquire in a Few Months

For now, I’ve sold the Fujifilm GFX100S to a reader and friend who has had no success on the waiting list. I have no immediate need for it, so I’ll just (probably) buy one in 2-3 months when I need it again.

I discuss my reasons for buying it and then selling it, and why you might or might not want one:

Fujifilm GFX100S: Why I Bought It, and Why I Sold It

Jon M writes:

It was interesting to read your reasons for discarding the GFX100S. I can easily see why you prefer the Sony A1 especially since there is a diminishing rate of return when going from 60 to 100 MP and the high quality lenses you have discovered for the Sony. Myself, I can’t wait to try the new Sony since it is the first version to tempt me to part with my hard earned cash since the Sony A7R II that I currently own. I made a conscious decision to save up and try to find a used Phase One at a price I could afford and finally got a XF camera with the IQ3 100MP back. Not the latest version, I know, but I am truly amazed by the quality of the images I am getting even though you have to deal with a less than modern interface and heavy gear.

This brings me to the question. I remember reading your evaluation of a loaner Phase One XF with an IQ4 150 MP back and your review is very favorable. I know that the price of the P1 is astronomical, but if it was priced at the same level as the Fuji X100S, would you still keep it?

DIGLLOYD: I want a 100MP sensor wrapped in a Sony A1 body format.

Probably I’d get the PhaseOne XT system, for compactness, and live with the headaches of the digital back. And if I had both monochrome and color backs, that adds additioanl value. For the photographer looking for the very best... sure.
