Sony A7R V: Firmware Update 2.0 Adds Creators App, Fixes High Pitched Whine, What Else?
The high-pitched whine issue with my Sony A7R V was resolved by Sony replacing the camera. See that page for a reader note that the firmware update might also resolve the issue.
Firmware updates done right (finally!)
Kudos to Sony for fixing the longstanding Sony “root kit” firmware update issue — Sony’s root kit approach to camera firware updates has long been a security concern. Sony has now done it right, aligning the firmware update process with best practices like Sony’s competitors.
Sony ILCE-7RM5 Firmware Update 2.00
How does one go from firmware 1.0 to 2.00 in the space of a few months?
The Sony firmware is the largest firmware I’ve ever seen at 954MB—nearly a gigabyte! That’s 10X to 20X larger than most. Perhaps it relates to the AI technology model.
Benefits and Improvements
- Adds support for the Creators' App
Note: The new Creators' App mobile application replaces the Imaging Edge Mobile app. The Creators' App allows you to transfer images from the camera to your smartphone, shoot remotely, and use various other functions.- Adds a function that improves security when connecting with the Creators' App and Imaging Edge Desktop software for remote shooting and image transfers
Note: Please update the Imaging Edge Desktop software to the latest version (Ver.3.6 or later)- Adds a function to switch the face that is prioritized for focus with a custom key
- Improves the operational stability of the camera
Notes:
- Refer to the Help Guide for details on all updated functions.
[DIGLLOYD: the help guide seemingly contains NOTHING on bug fixes or improvements]- If you use the Wireless Remote Commander/Shooting grip (GP-VPT2BT, RMT-P1BT), delete it from the Bluetooth Settings on the camera menu. Then pair the camera with the Wireless Remote Commander/Shooting grip again.
DIGLLOYD: none of the half a dozen important bugs/usability problems are mentioned. For example, the Unable to Magnify bug and the broken focus stacking support and the space-gobbling uncompressed-raw-only in pixel shift, let alone Pac-Man bites on edges.
The “Creators App” thing smacks of crapware, though I suppose I should give it a try... but I’ve yet to find a worthwhile app on any camera to date.
The “refer to the help guide” leads nowhere useful. Sony should list the fixes (if any) and don’t make me go hunt for them. It appears that in this 2.00 firmware update, we get one crapware app, and no useful improvements or bug fixes.

It's right in the name!
Creator's App
DIGLLOYD: I wonder what they are smoking at companies in order to think they can design computer software that is more than a bumbling cringe.
