Nikon Z8: Pixel Mapping Works
Sometimes features such as pixel mapping don’t seem that useful.
But when the Nikon Z8 arrived, the first thing I noticed in Live View in dark conditions was an obnoxious bright white pixel cluster just below and right of the center of the frame. I wondered... would pixel mapping take care of it?
Indeed, Nikon Z8 pixel mapping eliminated that hot pixel cluster. But why a brand-new camera should have a really nasty hot pixel... dunno.
Nikon’s approach to pixel mapping requires that a NIKKOR Z lens be mounted, a baffling requirement since it should have nothing to do with the lens, or even having a lens mounted, so long as body cap is on.
The other odd thing is how long it takes—quite a long time compared to other cameras I’ve used—about 100 seconds, which is about 20X longer than most cameras. Is Nikon being more thorough somehow?
