Putting the 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra into 'Production' Use
re: Apple 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra: Trading Up
The 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra is awesomely fast for SHA512 hashing eg for IntegrityChecker Java and BTW, a a Backup is a Hope and a Prayer unless it’s a VERIFIED backup.
Consult with Lloyd on which Mac Pro or Mac Studio is the best match for your needs.
Not that it has been an easy transition to macOS Ventura (required for the Mac Pro): macOS Ventura Setup on 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra.
I bought the 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra instead of the equally speedy 2023 Mac Studio M2 Ultra so that I could install my 16TB OWC Accelsior 4M2 PCIe SSD into it. Which makes it ironic that installing it will cause an infinite kernel panic/reboot loop due to sloppy Apple quality assurance* that won’t be fixed for several weeks in macOS Ventura 13.5.
UPDATE: no need for a PCIe card to crash macOS; macOS Ventura tried to self-destruct within 24 hours of unboxing.
- Apple M2 Ultra 24-Core CPU
- 192GB of Unified RAM (128GB OK for many users)
- 4TB SSD (8TB better, weigh needs carefully)
- 60-Core GPU | 32-Core Neural Engine
- 2 x PCIe 4 x16
- 4 x PCIe 4 x8 Slots
- 8 x Thunderbolt 4 Ports
- 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports
- Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) | Bluetooth 5.3
* When a company produces a machine whose sole raison d^etre vs an alternative is to accept PCIe cards (but not graphics cards!) and does not bother to test the most popular brand of PCIe SSD for Mac, that company has demonstrated gross incompetence and contempt for the most basic quality control.
