MTF for Leica 14-24mm f/2.8 Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL ASPH
MTF can be measured from a real lens, or computer simulated from a lens design. Leica uses simulated MTF which therefore means the graphs are fantasy MTF assuming perfect (impossible) actual lenses. Two decades of experience with a lot of Leica glass shows that real lenses rarely if ever are fully symmetric across the field, nor do they perform as well as computed charts suggest.
One has to wonder about these MTF claims; the 18mm results taken as a whole look about as good as the Leica 21mm f/2 Super-APO-Summicron-SL ASPH—the zoom is lower dead center, but higher in mid zones and a bit lower in the corners—all field curvature and focus shift related things. And the zoom’s astigmatism is at least as good as the 21/2.
