MTF for Hasselblad XCD 120mm f/3.5
MTF is shown below at f/3.5 and f/8 for both infinity focus and at 0.2X = 1:5 (focus at 0.8 meters from imageplane).

Wide open at f/3.5, central sharpness is outstanding—razor sharp though not as bitingly sharp as can be achieved by the Zeiss Otus 85/1.4 APO Planar at f/2.8. Peak performance likely improves somewhat at f/4 and f/5.6. Still, this kind of performance for a macro lens at infinity makes the 120/3.5 extremely useful as an all-arounder in the field—not just a macro lens.
At f/8, diffraction effects are cutting contrast of coarse, medium and fine structures. Aside from the extreme corners (and limits on depth of field), f/3.5 is superior to f/8. That’s what one hopes for in a high-grade lens—outstanding wide-open performance that f/8 cannot meaningfully improve upon.
