Sigma FE 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

MTF for Sigma FE 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

Sigma provides MTF charts that are computed and without reference to any spectral weighting. To Sigma’s credit, both diffraction and geometrical MTF charts are provided... but this is a meaningless distinction for an f/1.4 or f/2 or even f/2.8 lens, since diffraction has no meaningful role to play at those apertures.

Sigma further confuses the situation by providing only wide-open MTF and only at 10 (coarse structure ) and 30 lp/mm (medium structures), which is woefully inadequate for modern sensors hitting 110 lp/mm. At the least 40 lp/mm would be appropriate.

The most serious issue with Sigma MTF charts and virtually every other lens vendor (excepting Zeiss) is fantasy MTF based on computer calculations, not measurements using a real physical lens (as does Zeiss). What you buy can never achieve what is claimed.
