Converting a Color Camera to Monochrome

Most color cameras can be converted to monochrome, the process consisting of some way to strip the color filter array from the sensor. Various companies offer this service, with varying expertise.

To convert a camera to true monochrome, the CFA (color filter array) is physically removed with an acid or solvent. This leaves the sensor so that all pixels record all wavelengths of light without the red or green or blue filtration of the CFA. According to maxmax.com, some sensors are amenable to this, and others are not because of corrosion potential with some sensors due to the physical design.

Conversion of a color sensor to monochrome requires disassembly of the camera and precision reassembly. Some features can be lost, such as dust-off. When choosing a company for this work, you”ll want to exercise some caution, as there are many things that can go wrong.
