Nikon D850 Monochrome

Making of “Moon rising over Pine Creek Lake” (Nikon D850 Monochrome)

This page explains how the image was captured and processed.

True monochrome sensor — Nikon D850 monochrome

The Nikon D850 monochrome is a true monochrome sensor created by chemically removing the Bayer matrix from a standard Nikon D850. The increased sensitivity gain of nearly two stops makes the image nearly noise free, and highly suitable for photography in dim lighting.

1. First (and critical) step: the 47.4MP NEF raw file was converted to a 33.7MP monochrome DNG using LibRaw Monochrome2DNG. The conversion lets Adobe Camera Raw treat it as a pure monochrome image with no demosaicing.
