Raw-file Conversion & Nikon Capture

This page discusses conversion of Nikon RAW files (“NEF”) using Nikon Capture 4.4 (Nikon Capture NX 2 works in a very similar fashion). Conversion consists of verifying that the settings are the usual ones, then opening the image in Photoshop.

Occasionally a particular feature of Nikon Capture might be used (Vignetting correction, noise reduction, etc), but these are the exception.; straight and plain conversion is the usual approach, with post-processing done in Photoshop.

Typical Nikon Capture conversion settings

Shown below are the typical settings I use in Nikon Capture. Note the use of “ProPhoto RGB” for the color space; when an image is converted and later opened in an image editor, that is the color space that will be embedded in it.
