Mounting Binoculars To a Tripod For Ease of Viewing
By mounting the binoculars to a tripod, you save your neck and arms, and there is no motion-jiggle, which not only makes the image easy to view, but avoids fatigue as well as any motion sickness symptoms, especially with very high magnification binoculars.
Especially with 12X, 16X and higher power binoculars such as the Fujinon 16 X 70 binoculars, tripod support is all but mandatory, and mounts can get more elaborate.
The 1/4" socket
Some binoculars have a 1/4" 20 screw mount socket, the same socket found on the bottom of a camera. The socket is usually located at the front of the hinge, but might be hidden by a cover.
Other binoculars (eg Leica) might require an adapter plate to provide the 1/4" socket. And some binoculars just don’t have a socket—handheld only.
Mounting to a standard Arca Swiss clamp
If you’re a photographer looking to mount the binoculars to your regular tripod and tripod head, you’re likely using (or should be using) an Arca Swiss compatible clamp (see picture of clamp here), in which case you’ll want a small mounting plate to screw into the 1/4" socket.
