Autofocus Backfocus at Close Range

It was immediately apparent that relying on autofocus was a recipe for disaster, a good way to turn a 37.5 megapixel camera into a 20 or 12 megapixel camera.

Further testing 3 months later in October studies this problem in more detail with the 35mm, 70mm and 120mm lenses. It is not lens specific.

The resolution is so high, and the depth of field so shallow, and the lens quality so good, that delivering the camera‘s 37.5 megapixels is seriously at risk with autofocus.

See the autofocus examples page for how bad it can be. When making a comparison to the D3x, I found that the S2 autofocus was inferior to manual focus by eye, which is not good. I had to use manual focus for the comparison.
