MTF Analysis for Leica 45mm f/2.8 Elmarit-S ASPH
Performance is optimized for infinity focus as can be seen at each aperture for infinity focus versus close focus (toggle to compare): at close range, the performance drops off substantially in the mid and outer zones. This drop-off may be increased field curvature, or it may be something else optical.
At f/2.8 the 45/2.8 delivers high sharpness in a limited central area, dropping off very quickly to the outer zones to levels that will not seem particularly crisp. At close range at f/2.8, the performance is unsatisfactory in the mid and outer zones. Whether this is field curvature or optical performance cannot be said from the graph alone—probably some of both and probably mostly field curvature, so that in a 3D sense the results may be much better, but not good at all for an infinity focus scene at f/2.8. Ditto for any planar subject, such as a group portrait or the side of a building straight-on.
