Leica 45mm f/2.8 Elmarit-S ASPH

Overview of Leica 45mm f/2.8 Elmarit-S ASPH

Equivalent to a 35mm lens on the 35mm format, the about $6000 Leica 45m f/2.8 Elmarit-S ASPH is a moderately sized moderate wide angle that balances very nicely on the Leica S, albeit slightly larger and less pleasant than the 100mm f/2.

Optical performance wide open can be less than satitisfying, particularly at infinity focus where stopping down is needed to deliver peak results. This behavior is suggested by the MTF chart and confirmed in field use. While the softness across portions of the field may be due to field curvature, this is little solace if wishing to shoot a subject at a uniform distance at full aperture—this is best not done for some subjects—stop down to f/5.6, which also helps with any minor focus errors.
